Year of Graduation: 2013
Specialized HR Analyst
TD Bank Group
To be honest, when I first applied for the Honours BHRM program, I did not fully understand what HR was aside from recruitment. I had done some work in customer service and knew I enjoyed working with people, but at the time HR didn’t seem as popular or as widely discussed as the traditional fields that most of my peers were interested in. I feel extremely fortunate that I quickly fell in love with this program.
The professors were experts in their fields with real world knowledge that allowed me to think beyond the text. Having this rich academic foundational knowledge of HRM with a strategic lens has allowed me to differentiate myself within my current organization. Not only does this degree equip me with the knowledge and skills to be a successful HR practitioner, but the Honours BHRM also provided me with a toolbox of general business acumen and a set of analytical skills that have, and will continue to, prove invaluable.
Upon graduation, I was successful in joining TD Bank’s Human Resource department in an administrative capacity. This role was an incredible networking opportunity as well a unique avenue to view the HR playing field from a bird’s eye view. From the administrative role, I moved vertically to an HR Coordinator (HRC) role. This was a great way to gain HR generalist experience. Within HR Shared Services, I was part of a team that performs functions that “keep the lights on” such as payroll and vacation enquiries, as well as execution of our disability management program.
Currently I work within our HR Optimization group, working primarily with our Retirement and Benefits policy partners supporting vendor relations, analytics, and reporting. The next step that I am working towards is a role within our HR Business Partner realm, aiding our businesses to achieve their business goals through the use of strategic HR practices. I've been fortunate to have tried a few different roles within my organizations HR segment. Pivotal to that success has been the strong communication, strategic thinking, and analytical skill sets that I acquired while in the Honours BHRM program.
